Mount Rinjani 3-Day Trek: The Ultimate Guide for Adventure Travelers

Standing at 3,726 metres, Mount Rinjani is Indonesia’s second-highest volcano — and one of Southeast Asia’s most spectacular trekking destinations. The summit rewards those who reach it with a jaw-dropping caldera lake, steaming hot springs, and views that stretch to Bali on a clear morning.

But Rinjani isn’t just a mountain. It’s a test of endurance, a spiritual journey for the Sasak and Balinese people, and an adventure that will remain with you long after you return home. This guide covers everything you need to know to do it right.

🤔 Is the Rinjani Trek Right for You?

Let’s be honest: Rinjani is not for everyone, and that’s part of what makes completing it so rewarding. Here’s a straightforward guide to help you decide.

You’ll love it if you:

  • Have trekked before and are comfortable with long, steep trails

  • Can hike 6–10 hours a day carrying a daypack

  • Are drawn to dramatic natural scenery and volcanic landscapes

  • Want an adventure that goes beyond standard tourist experiences

  • Are comfortable with basic camping and outdoor sleeping

You might want to reconsider if you:

  • Have never done a multi-day trek before

  • Have knee, back, or heart conditions (consult your doctor first)

  • Are visiting during the wet season (December–March) — trails become dangerous

  • Expect luxury accommodation — this is mountain camping

💡 NusaTraveller Tip

If you’re unsure about your fitness level, start with our 2-day Sembalun Rim trek. You’ll still see the crater lake and get incredible views — without the full summit push. Ask us about this option when you book.

🗓️ 3-Day Rinjani Trek Itinerary (Sembalun Route)

The most popular route starts from Sembalun village on the eastern side of the mountain. This route offers the most dramatic approach, with open savannah giving way to steep ridge climbs and then the descent into the crater.

Day 1: Sembalun to Sembalun Crater Rim

Distance: ~10 km | Elevation gain: ~1,600 m | Duration: 7–9 hours

Your adventure begins at the Sembalun trailhead (1,156 m), where your guide and porter team will be waiting. The first few hours wind through open grasslands and forest — deceptively gentle before the trail steepens dramatically in the afternoon.

By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at the crater rim camp (2,639 m), where the first breathtaking views of Segara Anak lake appear below. The temperature drops sharply after sunset — have your warm layers ready. A hearty camp dinner is prepared by your porters, and you’ll sleep under some of the most spectacular stars you’ve ever seen.

Day 2: Summit Push + Descent to Crater

Summit push: ~2 km to summit | Duration: 3–4 hours (start at 2am)

Descent to crater: ~5 km | Duration: 4–5 hours

The summit push begins in darkness — usually around 2:00–3:00am. Why? Because you need to reach the top by sunrise, and the final stretch is steep volcanic scree that’s easier to climb in the cool night air. Your guide carries a torch and leads the way.

Reaching the summit of Rinjani at dawn is a genuinely life-changing moment. The horizon turns gold, clouds sit far below you, and on a clear day the silhouette of Mount Agung in Bali is visible across the Lombok Strait. Take it all in — you’ve earned this.

After descending back to the rim camp, the group continues down into the caldera itself, a steep but rewarding descent to the crater floor. Here, the turquoise Segara Anak lake sits beside a newer volcanic cone (Gunung Baru) that has been erupting since 1994.

Afternoon: Relax at the crater camp. Optional: soak in the natural Aik Kalak hot springs — one of the most surreal experiences on the entire trek.

Day 3: Crater to Senaru Village (Descent)

Distance: ~7 km | Duration: 5–7 hours

The final day is a long descent through dense rainforest on the northern Senaru trail. It’s tough on the knees but stunning — waterfalls, birds, and the lush green of Lombok’s jungle surroundings. By early afternoon, you’ll emerge at Senaru village, where a warm meal, a cold drink, and transport back to your hotel are waiting.

Most trekkers describe Day 3 as bittersweet — relieved to finish, but already thinking about going back.

🎒 What to Pack: The Rinjani Gear List

Your porter will carry the camping equipment, food, and cooking gear. You carry your own daypack with essentials. Here’s what we recommend:

Clothing & Footwear

  • Sturdy trekking boots — waterproof, broken in before the trek

  • Moisture-wicking base layer (top and bottom)

  • Fleece or warm mid-layer — summit temperatures can drop to 5°C

  • Windproof/waterproof outer shell jacket

  • Trekking trousers (avoid jeans — they’re heavy and cold when wet)

  • Warm hat and gloves for summit night

  • Sandals or flip-flops for the hot springs

Gear & Accessories

  • Daypack (20–30L) — porters carry the rest

  • Headlamp with fresh batteries (essential for summit night)

  • Trekking poles — strongly recommended, especially for the descent

  • Sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen

  • Refillable water bottle — minimum 2L capacity

  • Blister plasters and basic first aid

  • Camera or fully charged smartphone

Documents & Money

  • Passport or ID (required for park entry)

  • Cash in Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) — no ATMs on the mountain)

  • Travel insurance documents (strongly recommended)

Park Entry Fee

Included in NusaTraveller package

Tips for Porters

Recommended: IDR 100,000–150,000 per porter per day

Personal Spending

Allow USD $20–30 for drinks, souvenirs at the village

Avoid very cheap operators offering packages under $100 — this usually means under-equipped porters, poor food, and guides who don’t speak adequate English. The porters are the backbone of every Rinjani trek; a fair package ensures they are properly paid and equipped.

📅 Best Time to Trek Rinjani

Rinjani National Park officially closes during the peak wet season (typically January to March) due to landslide and safety risks. Outside of that, conditions vary significantly by month.

April – May

✅ Excellent — trails reopen, lush and green, fewer crowds

June – August

✅ Peak season — clear skies, best summit views, busy

September – October

✅ Great — warm days, cool nights, good visibility

November

⚠️ Late season — rain possible, still doable early in the month

December – March

❌ Wet season — park often closed, dangerous conditions

🧠 Insider Tips from Our Rinjani Guides

  • Train your legs before you come. Stair climbing, hiking with a loaded pack, and cardio 4–6 weeks before your trek will make a huge difference.

  • The summit push at 2am is the hardest part psychologically. Trust your guide’s pace — slow and steady is how you summit.

  • The volcanic scree on the final summit climb (the last 300m) will eat your energy. Two steps forward, one step back in loose ash. Just keep moving.

  • Hot springs are best visited in the late afternoon after your crater descent. They’re medicinal, relaxing, and incredibly well-earned.

  • Tip your porters generously. These remarkable people carry 25–30kg loads up steep mountain terrain for you. They make the whole experience possible.

  • Bring more warm layers than you think you need. Summit night temperature surprises almost everyone.

  • Leave no trace. Carry out everything you bring in. Rinjani’s beauty is a shared responsibility.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need prior trekking experience? Experience helps, but first-time trekkers in good physical shape complete this route every week. Our guides adapt the pace to your ability.

Is altitude sickness a risk? At 3,726m, mild altitude symptoms (headache, fatigue) are possible near the summit. Staying well-hydrated and ascending slowly minimises the risk. We monitor all guests throughout the trek.

Can I trek Rinjani solo without a guide? No — guides are mandatory by Indonesian national park law. All trekkers must be accompanied by a licensed guide.

Is the trek suitable for children? We generally recommend a minimum age of 14–15 for the full 3-day summit trek. Older teens in good shape do well. The 2-day rim trek is a better option for families.
